The Proving Ground Readme and FAQ File
27 Feb 2003
By Anil Das-Gupta. Posted with his permission.

Foreword:

Well, it's finally here, the finished version of the Proving Ground, an apprentice patch that allows shadowfist duelling online. It's been hard work inputting ALL the cards from the thousands available out there, but its all worth it when you kick some Shadowfist butts against players from international waters like the USA and France.

1.

Installation of the Proving Ground Patch couldn't be simpler, all you need to do is to unzip the file ProvingGround.zip to any spare directory on your hard drive. Once unzipped, go to that directory and double click on the Proving Ground Icon and away you go! If you don't have Winzip, you can download it for free from www.winzip.com

Once you have begun the program, you will be presnted with a background of Ting Ting and will see the main interface for the first time. Before proceeding, click on Options>Set Name and change your name from Secret Warrior to whatever you feel like to denote which player you are in the duel. Then click on Options>Preferences and click on Themes and/or backgrounds. In the Proving Ground / Graphix directory on your hard drive, you will find a variety of themes and backgrounds that you can use if you don't like Proving Ground's default skin.

2.

Once you have installed and set up Proving Ground, click on File>Deck Editor. From here you can make any deck you want to an dcan save it and export it to text file if you so wish. The Proving Ground now has every card ever made for Shadowfist, so you should be able to find what you need. If you can't think of a deck, or want a well-balanced duel, you can use the the 10 Thousand Bullets starters found in the Proving Ground / Decks / 10KBDecks folder. Remember to save your deck before quitting the Deck Editor.

3.

So great you have your deck and now want to play someone online. To do this go to File>New Game. Then click on Load Deck and load the deck you wish to play. Then click on Connect via the Internet. You now have two choices. You can either host the game (Wait for Call) or Join a game (Call My Opponent). If you host the game, tell your opponent your Ip number, dispalyed at the bottom of the New game window and click on waiting for opponent. After a few seconds of your opponent entering your IP address into his or her Proving Ground application, the match will begin. If you are calling an opponent, instead click on call my opponent at, and type in their IP address into the space and click ok.

5. Known Problems:

Sometimes when loading Proving Ground, you will be given a message saying " Violation error at address 0000000000046. Don't worry about this. If it happened when you opened the deck editor, close it and open it again until the message no longer appears.

Silver is not an Integer Value:
Sometimes this message will appear. It is to do with the Background picture used by Proving Ground. Discard this message, it will not have any effect on play.

Some Firewalls or Local Area Networks seem to have problems hosting or joining games. There is currently no solution to this problem. If you are behind a firewall you could try turning it off, but i wouldn't advice you to do this for security reasons.

Unknown Cards:
The eagle eyed amongst you will notice there are a few "bonus" cards in the Proving Ground that do not appear in the real game. If you are playing an oponent ask them if you can use these cards before you begin playing with them. It is my intention to add one fictional card designed by every player on the Shadowfist Forum, so if you have an idea for a card, mail me and i will add you to the mix :) Just for the record the extra cards at writing are:
Ace McFadden
Berrettas Akimbo
Yasuki Jul
